An Immutable Law of Life

Proverbs 11:25 Give freely, and you will profit. Help others, and you will gain more for yourself.

Certain laws of the universe are immutable. No matter how hard you try, how hard you shout and scream at them – whatever you do – they won’t bend, they won’t change.

On July 5th 1687, physicist and mathematician, Isaac Newton, published the document “Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy” or, for lesser mortals like thee and me – his Three Laws of Motion.

The first is about inertia (If something’s not moving, it will stay not moving. If something is moving, it’ll keep moving until something stops it). The second is about acceleration (the harder you push something,  the faster it’ll go). The third is one that most of us have heard of – for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Those laws are immutable. You cannot change them. It’s how the world works. Another law – one that may not be so obvious, one that comes not from Newton but from the One who created the whole world – is this one:

Proverbs 11:25 Give freely, and you will profit. Help others, and you will gain more for yourself.

We expect life to be a zero sum game. I have ‘x’, I give away ‘y’, now I only have ‘x minus y’ left. But in God’s kingdom here’s how it works. I have ‘x’, I give away ‘y’ … but now I’m left with ‘2 times x’, ‘3 times y’, ‘10 times z’ and whatever else God chooses to throw in.

It’s an immutable law of God’s universe. You can’t change it.

Give freely, and you will profit. Help others, and you will gain more for yourself.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
