Dealing with Disappointment
Luke 23:34 Jesus said, āFather, forgive them. They donāt know what they are doing.ā The soldiers threw dice to divide Jesusā clothes between them.
So when was the last time that you were disappointed by someone or something? How did it feel? How did it turn out? To what extent did your sense of disappointment make things better, or indeed, worse?
Things donāt always go our way. In fact, sometimes they seem to turn against us time and time again; a relationship isnāt going well, youāre under pressure at work, and then all of a sudden you fall ill. Itās one thing after another. And the disappointment of that is like a knife in the chest.
But when you think about it, disappointment isnāt something that happens out there somewhere. Itās our emotional response, and when we react to adversity with disappointment, that very reaction makes things worse.
Iām disappointed in you because you didnāt call. Iām disappointed because things didnāt work out. Iām going to mope around because I didnāt get my way.
Disappointment is the reaction of a victim, not a victor. Disappointment leads to a bad response on our part. Disappointment, at the end of the day, is our choice ā itās something that we can choose to sink into or choose to reject. Whether to be disappointed or not is completely up to you and me.
Perhaps that sounds a bit harsh. But when you read the stories about Jesus He wasnāt disappointed when people rejected Him, when they misunderstood Him, when they deserted Him ā even when they crucified Him. He didnāt allow their failures to ruin His day or drive Him off course. In fact, on that Cross
Luke 23:34 Jesus said, āFather, forgive them. They donāt know what they are doing.ā The soldiers threw dice to divide Jesusā clothes between them.
When things go against you, just like Jesus, you can choose to reject the disempowerment that disappointment brings.
Thatās Godās Word. Fresh ā¦ for you ā¦ today.
