Discovering Love

John 15:12,13 This is what I command you: Love each other as I have loved you. The greatest love people can show is to die for their friends.

Love, love, love. So many people promise so much in the love-stakes and yet, sadly, many of them fail to deliver. They say they love us, but when the going gets tough, so much of what pretends to be love proves that it never was.

Words are cheap, aren’t they? If someone says “I love you” that’s fantastic, but it doesn’t prove a thing. The evidence of their love or lack thereof is in what they do, so much more than what they say.

We all yearn to be loved, don’t we? We all yearn to be accepted unconditionally, just as we are, warts and all. But that sort of love is getting harder and harder to find in this world.

So when God says “I love you” what does He actually mean? How can we go beyond simple words to discover if what He’s saying to us is, in fact, true? Here’s what Jesus had to say on that very thing:

John 15:12,13 This is what I command you: Love each other as I have loved you. The greatest love people can show is to die for their friends.

And then … He did just that. He took the death that you and I deserve for our rebellion against God upon His shoulders on our behalf by dying a gruesome, horrible death on that Cross.

He didn’t just talk about it. Words are cheap. But Jesus’ actions speak louder, so much louder, than mere words.

Through the Cross of Christ and down through the centuries to you and me, here and now, God is crying out to us … Don’t you realise how much I love you?

So as you and I gaze on that bloodied cross, on His lifeless body … there can be no doubt.

In Christ, God loves you more than words can ever say.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
