Does it Work?

Acts 17:26,27 God began by making one man, and from him he made all the different people who live everywhere in the world. He decided exactly when and where they would live. “God wanted people to look for him, and perhaps in searching all around for him, they would find him. But he is not far from any of us.”

It’s a stark reminder to me when I watch the evening news – the riots, the protests, the people demanding this or that – that for those people, the God in whom I believe is completely irrelevant.

I have to be honest with you. For years I looked at this whole Christianity thing and the question that I needed to have answered was this: “Does it work?”

Clearly, if I were to become a Christian there’d be some things that I’d have to give up. There’s no good mincing words. Christianity has a moral basis to it. So if I was going to have to give some things up … well, I wanted to know that it made sense to do so – that it actually worked, that the sacrifice would be worth it. I don’t think that that’s such an unreasonable position to take.

Now, I don’t know quite how to put it without sounding trite, but a quarter of a century on, for me … absolutely it works. I’ve found a peace, a joy, a sense of fulfilment and contentment – yes, amongst all the trials and temptations that we each travel through – that I never, ever thought possible.

But it’s no good me telling you that. This is a decision each one of us has to come to for ourselves. And that’s exactly how it should be, because …

Acts 17:26,27 God began by making one man, and from him he made all the different people who live everywhere in the world. He decided exactly when and where they would live. “God wanted people to look for him, and perhaps in searching all around for him, they would find him. But he is not far from any of us.”

So, explore, investigate, examine, experience Him for yourself … but whatever you do, don’t waste your life.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
