Family Faithfulness

Hebrews 13:4 Marriage should be honoured by everyone. And every marriage should be kept pure between husband and wife. God will judge guilty those who commit sexual sins and adultery.

So let me ask you, what do you think about the institution of marriage? I guess your response will vary depending on your cultural background, your life experience and probably your age. Wherever you’re at, there’s absolutely no doubt that globally marriage rates are in sharp decline.

In the United States for instance, marriage rates have fallen by almost 50% since 1972. The same’s true in many western, developed economies. But it’s also happening in Iran, in Poland, in China, in Japan, in parts of Africa. This is a global phenomenon amidst changing social norms, economic factors and the empowerment of women.

The substitute has been everything from one night stands to friends with benefits, to loose coupling, to short, medium and long-term cohabitation. What do you make of all that?

Call me old fashioned, but even though I went through betrayal and divorce over 30 years ago, I remain a great believer in the institution of marriage. And not because I’m “religious” or because it’s a “cultural institution” but because, first and foremost, marriage is and always was, God’s idea. And here it is:

Hebrews 13:4 Marriage should be honoured by everyone. And every marriage should be kept pure between husband and wife. God will judge guilty those who commit sexual sins and adultery.

Some would consider that to be old-fashioned, fuddy-duddy, irrelevant in this day and age. Me? I’ve now been married to Jacqui, the most beautiful woman, for going on 27 years. Sure, there’ve been tough times. But that exclusive, forsaking all others marriage is the greatest blessing in my life.

Marriage – one man, one woman. It was always God’s idea.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
