For Your Own Good

Isaiah 48:17,18 The LORD, the Saviour, the Holy One of Israel, says, “I am the LORD your God. I teach you for your own good. I lead you in the way you should go. If you had obeyed me, then peace would have come to you like a full flowing river. Good things would have come to you again and again, like the waves of the sea.

I look back on some of the times in my life, some of the things that I’ve done, and I think to myself, Berni, how could you have been so stupid! You too, huh?

We have an amazing propensity to do dumb things. It starts pretty much from the moment we learn how to walk. We need to look after our toddlers – make sure we don’t leave sharp knives lying around, make sure they can’t get to a hot stove – you know the drill.

And that makes sense because they don’t know any better. It’s the instruction of their parents that eventually gets them there. Although, as any parent will tell you, sometimes it seems like they’ll never learn. That’s why parenting can be a grind; the same “no”, the same screaming and rebellion, over and over again.

Just as well you and I aren’t like that. Just as well we’ve learned all our lessons. Just as well we have our act together. Yeah, right!

We set boundaries to teach our kids for their own good. And God does exactly the same. When we listen to Him, when we obey Him, (unpopular as that notion may be these days) then … here’s the promise.

His river of peace will flood your soul. His blessings will fill your life again and again. Learn His lessons. They’re for your own good.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
