Fried Eggs

1 Peter 1:22 You have made yourselves pure by obeying the truth. Now you can have true love for your brothers and sisters. So love each other deeply – with all your heart.

In this day and age, with the busy, technology-driven lives many people lead, the idea of Christian community, Christian fellowship can seem a bit, well, old-fashioned, don’t you think?

I was having dinner with two other men recently in Los Angeles – an American, an Englishman and me the Australian – sounds like the beginning of a joke, doesn’t it? Three guys walked into a bar …

Anyhow, each of us travel the world, doing the things that God has called us to. So, we were chatting about Christian fellowship and community, wondering if that was even possible for the likes of us. I mean I travelled to 19 countries last year to minister the Gospel. How do you actually belong to a Christian fellowship, when that’s how you live?

Earlier that day, we’d been listening to a Filipino woman, talking about this idea of Christian community in her country. She put a slide up, with a picture of six or seven eggs in a frying pan. And she said:

For us Filipinos, this is what community looks like. The yolks are the individuals, but the whites all merge together so you can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. This is how we live.

The point she was making, was that they think and act far more as a community than they do as individuals.

Now, we all live in different cultures. But I just wonder whether that day, God didn’t teach me one of the most important lessons of my life. I wonder whether this isn’t the picture God has in His heart, of this thing He calls – church.

1 Peter 1:22 You have made yourselves pure by obeying the truth. Now you can have true love for your brothers and sisters. So love each other deeply – with all your heart.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
