God’s Compassion for You
Psalm 103:13 As a father has compassion for his children, so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him.
When it sees someone suffering, a soft heart, a tender heart, will experience that person’s pain as though it were its own … at which point, it becomes deeply motivated to relieve what’s now become a shared suffering.
At different times in our lives, we’ve each been on either side of this great love transaction that we refer to as ‘compassion’. Any parent will many times have been overwhelmed with compassion at the sight of their child suffering.
And on some of the darkest days of our own lives we’ve each been comforted, sustained, upheld through the compassion of others. Doubtless, as you reflect on those times, your heart grows warm in such a special way at the memory of those who showed you compassion; who stepped in as best they could to alleviate your suffering.
It’s from this deep personal experience of compassion that we might best begin to understand what God’s saying here:
Psalm 103:13 As a father has compassion for his children, so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him. (NRSV)
When we go to Him believing simply that He is the God who sent Jesus His Son to suffer, to die for us, to bear the terrible punishment that justice demands for our rebellion against Him, taking our suffering before Him and laying it down at the foot of that Cross, make no mistake … the great and mighty Father-heart of God is overwhelmed with a compassion that we can scarcely comprehend.
Take all your pain, all your suffering to Him. Because just as a father has compassion for his children, so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him.
That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
