He Heard My Cry

Psalm 116:1-6 I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow. Then I called on the name of the LORD: “LORD, save me! ” The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The LORD protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me.(NIV)

Early the other morning, while it was still pitch black outside, I was preparing today’s message and there was a cat outside my study window crying out, howling desperately. It only went on for a few minutes but that pitiful cry stuck with me.

It really was quite haunting because it transported me back to those few times in my life when my pain was so deep that all I could do was sob.

I don’t know how your life’s played itself out, but anyone who’s been around the block just a few times has been there too, right? For me at least, it felt a lot like it did for whoever wrote this:

Psalm 116:1-4 I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow. Then I called on the name of the LORD: “LORD, save me! ” (NIV)

Yep, exactly like that. I too cried out to Him. Lord, save me! And remarkably, it turned out for me just as it did for the psalmist.

Psalm 116:5-7 The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The LORD protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me. Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has been good to you. (NIV)

When the pain is so deep that you don’t have words, cry out to God. He will hear you. He will save you. He will protect you. He will give you His peace.

Because that’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
