In My Opinion …

Proverbs 17:28 and 29:20 Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues. … Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them.

Everyone seems to have an opinion about everything these days. Whilst in one sense there’s nothing new in that – people have been gossiping over the back fence since forever – social media’s provided us each with an instant outlet to trumpet our views. And, sorry to mix my metaphors here, how often does that leave them looking completely stupid with egg on their face?

I have to tell you, I treat so-called ‘facts’ published online with a great deal of suspicion. Not because I’m a conspiracy theorist but because people often present their completely unfounded opinions as facts, triggering countless others to head down the most incredulous wormholes.

You may recall during last year’s Olympics the vitriol hurled at Algerian boxer, Imane Khelif, for allegedly being a transgender biological male competing against women.

Well, didn’t both the established and social media jump on that bandwagon, lighting up with such vitriol, only for it later to emerge that she was, in fact, biologically female.

And what really bothers me is when Christians inject their so-called religious beliefs into these sort of nonsenses, bringing the Gospel of Christ, bringing Jesus, bringing the enormity of God’s love into disrepute.

Proverbs 29:20 Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them. (NIV)

Perhaps, as someone posted in the midst of that whole furore, we need to normalise not having an opinion on things about which we aren’t properly informed.

Proverbs 17:28 Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues. (NIV)

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
