In the Shelter of the Most High

Psalm 91:1-2 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”

Somehow, the world always seems to be teetering on the edge of disaster. Whether it was the Cold War back in the day (and hey, there are still thousands of nuclear missiles ready to be launched at a moment’s notice), the conflicts that perennially flare up in the Middle East threatening to draw the superpowers into a world war, pandemics as we’ve seen more recently or, as some claim, climate change. Yep, there’s always something.

So it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the global market for survival bunkers, or doomsday shelters as they’re sometimes called, is growing at a rapid pace, with spending currently running at a tad over $US 2.5 billion per annum and a predicted compound annual growth rate of 6.4%

Typically, these bunkers basically have reinforced concrete walls, air filtration systems, emergency supplies (food, water and medical), power generators and sanitation systems. Some of the high end ones for the richy-rich even include movie theatres, swimming pools, gyms and hydroponic gardens. True story.

But however strong and well-equipped your bunker may be, is cutting yourself off from the world really going to save you from a long term, global calamity?! And come on … no matter how clever, how strong, how well prepared you are in life, can you ever really save yourself from the calamities that’ll inevitably befall you? But …

Psalm 91:1-2 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” (NRSV)

They don’t call Him ‘Saviour’ for nothing.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
