It is Well With My Soul (4)
2 Thessalonians 3:16 We pray that the Lord of peace will give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all.
All too often when disaster strikes, when we’re suffering as a result, we cry out to God for the pain to end, for Him to deliver us from the suffering, without enquiring of Him what His plans might be.
Over these past few days we’ve been stepping our way, verse by verse, through the beautiful hymn, It is Well With My Soul. As I mentioned the other day, it was written by Horatio Spafford, a successful lawyer and wealthy property investor, who was completely ruined through the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the economic fallout that ensued.
His son already dead, he decided to serve God by sailing to England to assist D.L. Moody in his evangelistic campaigns, so he sent his wife and four daughters ahead while he finalised their affairs.
But their ship sank. All four daughters perished – only his wife, Anna, survived. Unimaginable grief! Those events could not have been undone, no matter how hard he prayed. Yet he was able to pen these words on his sad journey alone across the Atlantic:
For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live: If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life, Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.
Horatio had discovered that when we make Christ our all in all, no matter what befalls us, Jesus is there to whisper His peace to our soul. And sometimes that’s exactly what He has planned.
2 Thessalonians 3:16 We pray that the Lord of peace will give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all.
And that’s my prayer for you today – that no matter what befalls you, in Christ no pang shall be yours as He whispers His peace to your soul.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
