Light in the Dark
2 Corinthians 4:6 For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (NRSV)
The idea that you can experience the love of a God whom you’ve never met in person, a God you can’t see, would by some at least be considered delusional. That’s fair enough, until the light of His love shines in your heart. Then, you can never be the same again.
I travel rather a lot and I was sitting alone in my hotel room recently on the other side of the world from home. So I closed my eyes and I could see my wife’s face. I wasn’t alone anymore. Have you ever had that? You picture someone who loves you, and there’s a warmth, a light that just floods your heart and indeed your whole body.
If God’s supposed to love us, can that happen with God? Can we actually get a handle on Him and know that love in our actual experience? Good question.
Well, it’s for that very reason that He sent His Son, Jesus. Do you want to know what God looks like? Look at Jesus; God who became man, God who loved the unlovable, God who suffered and died for you and for me. Right at the very beginning of creation, this is what happened:
Genesis 1:3 God said, “Let there be light!” And light began to shine. He saw the light, and he knew that it was good.
The very first thing God spoke into creation was light. Think about that! Fast forward to the New Testament, and the Apostle Paul puts it this way:
2 Corinthians 4:6 For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (NRSV)
No matter where we are, how alone we feel, how good, bad or indifferent our lives are. Let there be Light. Jesus.
