Making the Effort
Isaiah 40:8 Grass dies and flowers fall, but the word of our God lasts forever.
When I first became a Christian, honestly, I found the Bible difficult to read. A lot of it didn’t make sense to me. And the easiest thing in the world to do, is to give up. So many have just given up. What a tragedy.
The second biggest reason that so-called Christians give for not reading their Bible – not listening to God speak His love and His wisdom and His power into their lives – is that it’s too hard to understand. Hmm.
I’m going to be blunt and direct here – it’s part of my endearing charm. God’s gone to a lot of trouble to record and preserve His Word; the 66 books of the Bible. Through a bunch of different authors, inspired by the Holy Spirit at different times and in different cultures, over about 1,500 years, God writes down His story.
Then He preserves it with remarkable accuracy down over the millennia for you and me, here and now. Forensically speaking, the Bible is the most accurate and most attested to ancient text on the planet by a country mile.
And these days we have so many free resources to help us make sense of it – the YouVersion app, studylight.org, openbible.info, free Bible dictionaries, devotionals. It’s all laid on, so that with just a little bit of effort the Bible makes sense. And what … we can’t be bothered?
Isaiah 40:8 Grass dies and flowers fall, but the word of our God lasts forever.
The Bible is God’s way of speaking His love, His power, His peace, His joy, His wisdom, into our lives. Sure, it was written in a different time and place. But these days, it’s so easy to get that little bit of help you need for it to make sense; to make a powerful difference in your life.
Read your Bible.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
