Marriage – The Most Important Thing

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives the same as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it.

There are days when being a husband to a wife simply isn’t easy. And sadly, it’s on days like those, that many a husband simply gives up.

Marriage is the most wonderful idea. It’s God’s idea, and a really good one at that. But marriage can also be an incredibly tough gig. The idea is that the two, the man and the woman who to this point had lived separate lives, end up becoming one.

Sounds great, but that process of “becoming one” just isn’t easy some days. In fact, some days, it downright hurts. And at that point, we start thinking to ourselves, “Something must be wrong with her.” Or if you’re the wife, “Something must be wrong with him.” “Something’s wrong with our marriage.”

Well, no, actually, the hurting bit, it’s really quite normal. And the most important thing I’ve ever learned – by a country mile – about my role as a husband to my beautiful wife is this:

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives the same as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it.

Let’s just stop and think about that for a minute. What is it that God’s saying to us husbands, through this powerful Scripture?

Well, Jesus was nailed to a cross. Brutally – hands and feet – nailed to a cross for us. And it hurt – like hell, quite literally! Dying to yourself always does. Jesus suffered incredibly, because of our sins, to pay the price in extreme agony.

And on those difficult days, the sorts of days that every marriage has, that’s precisely how God wants husbands to love their wives. Sure, some days it hurts. But make no mistake about it. It works.

Husbands, love your wives the same as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
