Mastering Money

Matthew 6:24 You cannot serve two masters at the same time. You will hate one and love the other, or you will be loyal to one and not care about the other. You cannot serve God and Money at the same time.

Too many people who believe in Jesus, who love Him with all their heart (well, almost all their heart) are trying to live their lives like a dog with two masters.

One of the greatest joys in our family is a fluffy little dog called, ā€œMuffinā€. She brings so much joy and laughter into our home. And her heart is always to please us. So imagine now, if my wife called Muffin to come, and at the same time, I told Muffin to stay. What would the poor dog do?

And yet, thatā€™s how many so-called Christians live their lives. In their heart of hearts, they want to follow Jesus. Really, they do. But the things of this world, the baubles, the trinkets, theyā€™re so alluring. They promise so much.

I used to love money with a passion. My aim in life was to make as much of it as I possibly could. But deep down, I knew that if I decided to become a Christian, that was a passion Iā€™d have to give up. Maybe I couldnā€™t have put it quite that succinctly back then, but deep down ā€¦ I knew. And I was right!

Matthew 6:24 You cannot serve two masters at the same time. You will hate one and love the other, or you will be loyal to one and not care about the other. You cannot serve God and Money at the same time.

Giving up the love of money was a difficult, and at times painful process. It involved some difficult decisions: giving up a lucrative career, learning to be generous. Hey, Iā€™m telling you, it was tough.

But the reward of all that was something I didnā€™t expect. Freedom.

Listen, you canā€™t live a conflicted life. You canā€™t follow Jesus and chase after wealth. You just canā€™t.

Thatā€™s Godā€™s Word. Fresh ā€¦ for you ā€¦ today.
