The Missing Piece of the Puzzle

Luke 5:15-16 But the news about Jesus spread more and more. Many people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. Jesus often went away to other places to be alone so that he could pray.

Have you ever felt that something’s missing out of your life? It’s as though you’re going through all the motions, but one part of the puzzle, in fact a big part of the puzzle, is just missing. And yet it’s not entirely clear to you, what that piece looks like or where to go searching for it. If you found it, would you even know?

For many a would-be Christ-follower, something does appear to be missing. The world seems to have convinced us that outward appearances, success, busy lives, transactional relationships, nice clothes – that’s where it’s all at these days.

But you and I know that that sort of life just leads to shallowness; a hollowness; a sense that something … something is missing.

Is that perhaps the sort of relationship that you’re living out with Jesus at the moment? The sort where outward appearances matter? Where the way you dress and the way you speak and the way you serve God are the things that matter? Because, to be perfectly honest, none of those things seemed to matter all that much to Jesus. Check this out:

But the news about Jesus spread more and more. Many people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. Jesus often went away to other places to be alone so that he could pray. (Luke 5:15-16)

Jesus had rock star status back there in the first century. When He came to a region, whole towns would close down so that people could go and hear Him speak.

I remember when I was a kid, back in 1964 when The Beatles came to Australia, watching the black and white TV, seeing the huge crowds lining the streets, all pushing and shoving to get a glimpse of their favourite band. Thousands upon thousands of people.

That’s what it was like with Jesus. He was a celebrity. And yet, He often withdrew to other places; quiet places; isolated and deserted places; to be alone so that He could spend some time with His Father in prayer.

Jesus was so much more concerned about His hidden relationship with Abba, Dad, than He was with His superstar status with the crowds.

Jesus often went away to other places to be alone so that he could pray.

Amidst all the clamour and clanging in your life, do you hear Him calling you?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Mighty Father, please show Your love to Your people. Condition our hearts that we willingly come to hear what You want to instruct us with from Your Word. Let it bring a beautiful brokenness in us that we love You with tenderness.
Thank You Jesus.
