My Cup Runneth Over
Psalm 23:5,6 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (ESV)
Some people are natural pessimists. They’re typically the detailed people who can see all that’s going wrong. Others are natural optimists – the dreamers, the planners. But there’s a third kind of person.
You’ve no doubt heard it said that you’re either a cup-half-empty or a cup-half-full person. That’s normally the way. I’m naturally the cup-half-full kind of guy. I see opportunity – potential in situations, even when they’re not ideal. And to balance that, I surround myself with some cup-half-empty people to keep my feet firmly planted on the ground.
So who are these people that break the mould completely – the third kind? I call them the ‘cup-runneth-over’ people.

Another Psalm of David … the guy who had more enemies than you could poke a stick at. He learned that no matter how dire his circumstances, that God was in that place with him. Look at the crazy picture he paints:
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
The enemy’s army is swarming over the hill, but God has set a table, a feast before him. David doesn’t see the cup as half full or half empty. His cup runneth over. Why? Because he knows that God is in that place with him.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
