Never Go it Alone

Exodus 33:13-16 Now if I have found favour in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favour in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” And he said to him, “If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favour in your sight, I and your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people, from every people on the face of the earth.” NRSV

Few people realise the very significant burden that leaders carry. That mantle of leadership is one which can weigh heavy some days. Big decisions need to be made – sometimes, life and death decisions.

We’re continuing today with Moses’ story, as He struggled with what seemed to be the insurmountable opportunity, set before him by God, to lead Israel through the wilderness and into the Promised Land.

These people … they grumbled, they complained, they even rebelled against God so badly that Moses, in his righteous anger, destroyed the two stone tables with the Ten Commandments and had to go back up the mountain to God a second time.

Moses found himself between a rock and a hard place. So, what did he pray before God?

Exodus 33:13-16 Now if I have found favour in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favour in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” And he said to him, “If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favour in your sight, I and your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people, from every people on the face of the earth.” NRSV

The upshot of Moses’ prayer? God, if you don’t come with me, I ain’t going! It’s a prayer that found favour with God. It’s a prayer that God honoured.

#NoteToSelf: When God sets an insurmountable opportunity before you, never, ever, go it alone.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
