Oh Lord It’s Hard to be Humble
Ephesians 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
Humility, gentleness and patience are, for all of us I think, right up there atop of our list of qualities that we love to find in other people. I mean, who wouldn’t like to surround themselves with folk like that? And yet, they’re qualities – let’s be honest – that sometimes fail us in our attitudes and behaviour towards others.
Back in 1980, Texan country singer, Mac Davis, released a catchy song about humility – or, more to the point, the lack thereof. The chorus goes something like this:
Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every way
I can’t wait to look in the mirror, ’cause I get better lookin’ each day
To know me is to love me, I must be a hell of a man
Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble, but I’m doin’ the best that I can!
Funny, yes, but also just a tad revealing. Of course, not everyone’s arrogant, but we all have our moments, don’t we?
Ephesians 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. (NIV)
That makes you think, doesn’t it, about how you see yourself in relation to others; about where on the pecking order – in your mind – you put yourself, compared to those around you?
Well, where are you on the pecking order? The truth is, the lower you position yourself, the greater will be your tendency toward patience, humility and love.
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
