Overcoming Financial Stress (1)

Matthew 6:25-27 So I tell you, don’t worry about the things you need to live—what you will eat, drink, or wear. Life is more important than food, and the body is more important than what you put on it. Look at the birds. They don’t plant, harvest, or save food in barns, but your heavenly Father feeds them. Don’t you know you are worth much more than they are? You cannot add any time to your life by worrying about it.

One of the biggest causes of stress in society today is personal finances. Rising prices. Rising rents. Punishing mortgage interest. Health care. How do I make ends meet? It’s causing a lot of people a lot of worry.

This Newsweek headline recently caught my eye: “Financial Insecurity Causing a Mental Health Crisis.” Let me quote from their survey:

88% of respondents felt some level of financial stress. 65% said their finances were their biggest source of stress, having a significant negative impact on Americans’ mental health. 41% even said their finances had “destroyed” their mental health, and 64% reported feeling “financial fatigue”—a sense of burnout or exhaustion in dealing with money matters.

If that’s the richest country in the world, what hope do the rest of us have? And that’s exactly what’s needed here. Hope, real hope … because it’s the one thing that can quell the worry and alleviate the stress of navigating these treacherous financial waters. Enter Jesus:

Matthew 6:25-27 So I tell you, don’t worry about the things you need to live—what you will eat, drink, or wear. Life is more important than food, and the body is more important than what you put on it. Look at the birds. They don’t plant, harvest, or save food in barns, but your heavenly Father feeds them. Don’t you know you are worth much more than they are? You cannot add any time to your life by worrying about it.

All that worrying does is make your problems seem bigger than they are. Listen, trust God. He will get you through.

Because that’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
