Matthew 20:29-34 When Jesus and his followers were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. There were two blind men sitting by the road. They heard that Jesus was coming by. So they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, please help us!” The people there criticized the blind men and told them to be quiet. But they shouted more and more, “Lord, Son of David, please help us!” Jesus stopped and said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” They answered, “Lord, we want to be able to see.” Jesus felt sorry for the blind men. He touched their eyes, and immediately they were able to see. Then they became followers of Jesus.

For many people, church is great – not for everyone, mind you, but for many. I see lots of comments on Facebook about how much people enjoy their church family. Great … but is there a risk that we’re becoming just a tad too comfortable?

I had a thought the other day. If Jesus wandered into my church, into your church this week looking for a job, would we hire him as our minister?

I mean, my church is such a clean, tidy, efficient place. We do some really good things there. We help the poor, we sing songs and listen to the minister on Sundays, we … well, you get the picture … it’s a good place; an encouraging place.

But would we want Jesus in our congregation? Would we hire him as our minister? I mean, He was out there with the prostitutes, the lepers, the tax collectors, the despised, the rejected. He reached out to people whom others passed by.

I wonder whether we, the church, whether you and I, relate more to the crowd, or to Jesus.

The people there criticised the blind men and told them to be quiet.
