Practically Perfect in Every Way
Luke 6:29 If someone hits you on the side of your face, let them hit the other side too. If someone takes your coat, don't stop them from taking your shirt too.
Sadly, this world is populated by difficult people. People who don’t always play the game, the way we want them to.
The movie “Mary Poppins” is a true classic. One of the first things she tells Michael and Jane about herself, is that she’s “practically perfect in every way”! And as things turn out, she is!
Wouldn’t it be fantastic to be surrounded by a bunch of people who are practically perfect in every way? And, if the truth be known, that’s what we us expect of others. Perfection.
Now, back in the real world, it just isn’t like that, is it? More often than not, we get a slap in the face, at least once a day, if not more. So how do you respond to those imperfect people, those difficult people? When you get a slap in the face, a rejection, disloyalty, dishonesty, a harsh word, unfair criticism, how do you respond?
Well, mostly, we’ll turn around and slap them back, only a bit harder. Or we’ll withdraw, a bit like the devil, and wait for a more opportune time to attack, to retaliate. But that’s not necessarily the best way of handling things. Jesus said:
Luke 6:29 If someone hits you on the side of your face, let them hit the other side too. If someone takes your coat, don’t stop them from taking your shirt too.
What sort of a response is that?
Well, it’s a godly response. It’s the response of this Jesus, who, because you and I slapped Him in the face with our sin, turned around and died for us. It’s that sort of a response.
So, when that difficult person comes along today and slaps you in the face, again, turn the other cheek.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
