Self-Promotion in Disguise

Proverbs 27:1-2 Never brag about what you will do in the future; you have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Never praise yourself. Let others do it.

Let’s face it, boasting is an ugly habit. It’s crass. It turns most of us off … and yet people still do it. But not all of it is “in your face” so to speak. A good deal of self-promotion, of bragging, comes dressed in any number of disguises.

Yep, boasting arrives incognito. Take humble bragging. “Oh, I’m so exhausted from my vacation in Paris; the jetlag’s killing me.” Or name dropping – “I was just chatting with so and so about that very thing last week,”as though “so and so” is a lifelong friend when at best, they’re a passing acquaintance.

Some people – and this is totally what makes social media tick – only share their achievements, never any of their failures or struggles, creating a skewed image of their lives.

Have you ever heard someone being overly modest? “I cannot believe they chose me as employee of the year. There are so many more deserving people.” Or a manager who refers to “my team” as though they own them.

There’s seemingly an endless array of ways to brag, to self-promote, to leave people in no doubt that, in your opinion at least, you’re far superior to them.

Can I ask you, honestly, have you ever done that? And if so, why? Often it comes from a deep sense of insecurity, from the need to show people how truly wonderful you are.

Proverbs 27:1-2 Never brag about what you will do in the future; you have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Never praise yourself. Let others do it.

There’s a saying in business that if you treat your clients right, they’ll do your marketing for you. The same’s true in our personal lives too.

Never praise yourself. Let others do it for you.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
