Smoking Kills

Romans 3:23,24 All have sinned and are not good enough to share God’s divine greatness. They are made right with God by his grace. This is a free gift. They are made right with God by being made free from sin through Jesus Christ.

I never cease to marvel at our capacity for self-delusion. We know that something we’re doing is wrong, that it’s going to have consequences down the track, and yet we keep on doing it – amazing really, when you think about it.

The other morning we’d run out of eggs for breakfast, so I wandered down to the local corner store to buy some more.

A sign behind the counter caught my eye. “Smoking Kills.” And yet the man in front of me bought a packet of cigarettes.

Now there’s a whole economy built around something that we know kills people. And to make that really personal, that shopkeeper was prepared to make money out of someone else’s misery.

Now we have an advertising industry that puts a glossy spin on that stuff all the time, but you just can’t look at it any other way. Smoking kills.

And if we’re honest with ourselves, you and I can point to things in our lives that we know are wrong. We just know they are. That’s why, when it comes to God, we all fall short.

Romans 3:23 All have sinned and are not good enough to share God’s divine greatness.

That’s the bad news. That’s the “Sin Kills” sign. We know it’s there, but we’re addicted to it. Yet straight after that, in the very next verse, comes the good news.

Romans 3:24 They are made right with God by his grace. This is a free gift. They are made right with God by being made free from sin through Jesus Christ.

What’s the answer? How do we break the addiction? How do we set our lives on the path that leads to life rather than death? Put all your eggs in one basket and believe in Jesus. Trust in Him and Him alone. It’s His free gift.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
