Spiritual Exhaustion

Genesis 3:18 I will curse the ground because of you. You will have to work hard all your life for the food the ground produces. The ground will grow thorns and weeds for you. And you will have to eat the plants that grow wild in the fields.

Life here in the 21st century seems so … divorced, so disconnected from the whole God dimension. We rush here, we rush there … and before you know it, you’re heading in the wrong direction.

We seem to do an awful lot of rushing around in this life. Whether it’s chasing down all the different entertainment experiences that present themselves, or working hard to pay for all our whims and desires. That’s why so many people who seem to have so much, are so tired.

And when you are tired, when you are exhausted, all you tend to see is the human dimension; the physical dimension that presents itself here and now. You’re working too hard, or there’s a relationship that’s causing you grief, or your money worries. Those are the things we feel and experience. They must be the problem.

But what if those things, are only the symptoms of a much deeper spiritual malady. Adam and Eve had a perfect existence, perfect work-life balance, until one day, they rejected God. It wasn’t a big thing. They just ate that one piece of fruit.

But that’s when it all started to unravel. As God was dealing with Adam, this is what He said to him:

Genesis 3:18 I will curse the ground because of you. You will have to work hard all your life for the food the ground produces. The ground will grow thorns and weeds for you. And you will have to eat the plants that grow wild in the fields.

God wanted them to go in one direction, but they knew better. They did the exact opposite, and so they spent the rest of their days pulling in the opposite direction to God. Think about that – God’s pulling in one direction, and you’re pulling in the other. That’s got to be exhausting!

And that’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
