The Human Condition
Luke 2:12-14 This is how you will know him: You will find a baby wrapped in pieces of cloth and lying in a feeding box.” Then a huge army of angels from heaven joined the first angel, and they were all praising God, saying, “Praise God in heaven, and on earth let there be peace to the people who please him.”
How many times have you heard some preacher telling you about “the real meaning of Christmas” this time of year? Yawn. And so we just let another Christmas drift on by. Tragic really.
At some point in our lives, amidst all the hurly-burly and all the stuff we do, each one of us comes to the point of wondering, What am I doing on this earth? What’s the point? Where’s the satisfaction?
On a clear, starry night, two thousand years ago, God’s eternal plan was born. A Son. And as His first cry rang out over all the other sounds of that stable – the animals, Mary’s birth pangs, perhaps the creaking sound of the wooden building in the wind – a Father looked down at His Son.
Luke 2:12-14 This is how you will know him: You will find a baby wrapped in pieces of cloth and lying in a feeding box.”
What must God the Father have been feeling? An unspeakable joy at seeing His great plan for humanity begin to unfold, and at the same time, a deep and profound sadness in knowing what His Son would have to suffer?
But with all of that going on in His great and mighty heart on that night, God was speaking to you and me. He was speaking of His immense love for us. He was reaching out of some obscure stable in some obscure village, inviting us to believe in His Son.
What’s life all about? Where’s it going? What’s the point? They’re all symptoms of an emptiness that’s been engineered, hand crafted into the DNA of our souls by God Himself, to be filled with a gift. Jesus.
And that, right there, is what Christmas is all about. He yearns for you. He sent His Son for you.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
