The Paper Cut

Colossians 2:13,14 You were spiritually dead because of your sins and because you were not free from the power of your sinful self. But God gave you new life together with Christ. He forgave all our sins. Because we broke God’s laws, we owed a debt—a debt that listed all the rules we failed to follow. But God forgave us of that debt. He took it away and nailed it to the cross.

The Cross of Christ is a serious business. But I wonder as we celebrate what happened there on that hill, Golgotha, I wonder how many of us really, in our heart of hearts, comprehend what was taking place.

Have you ever had a paper cut? It’s really painful isn’t it, and it stays with you constantly for a few days. To be perfectly honest, I tend to feel a bit sorry for myself when I get the odd paper cut. Poor old me.

Imagine then the pain that shot through Jesus’ body when they drove nails through His hands and His feet. As those nails tore through His flesh. And not only that, but then, they lifted up the cross and He hung there, by those same nails, His whole weight tearing at those nail holes in His flesh as He died slowly over several hours, eventually suffocating because He no longer had the strength to draw breath.

What was all that about? Why did it have to happen that way?

Colossians 2:13,14 You were spiritually dead because of your sins and because you were not free from the power of your sinful self. But God gave you new life together with Christ. He forgave all our sins. Because we broke God’s laws, we owed a debt—a debt that listed all the rules we failed to follow. But God forgave us of that debt. He took it away and nailed it to the cross.

You and I, we are pretty good at sweeping our sin under the carpet. But when you see Jesus hanging there on that Cross, you realise that God didn’t sweep it under the carpet. In fact, He took our sin so seriously, that He put it on His Son and nailed it to that Cross.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
