The Peace of Christ

Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. (ESV)

These last few days we’ve been chatting about peace, because peace amidst the turmoil of this world is perhaps the most sublime gift of all that comes to us from the hand of God. But there’s a common mistake that we make when it comes to the peace on offer.

You know how it goes … we know that we’re meant to have peace in our hearts. Perhaps you’ve heard sermons about it. Maybe you recall Jesus’ own words … my peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you.

However, when it comes to you in your hour of need, you probably know the theory; you’re meant to have peace. That’s the deal with God. That’s the promise. That’s what’s meant to happen, right?!

But when you’re under pressure, when you’re afraid, when worry keeps you awake, tossing and turning all night, the theory simply isn’t enough. So you think to yourself … I’m meant to live in peace. And then (and we’ve all done this at some point) we start believing that it’s up to us to conjure up that peace in the face of our troubles.

That’s the mistake we make. That’s the pressure we put ourselves under. But when your need for peace is at its most desperate, that’s the very time that it seems to elude you, correct? There’s a reason for that.

Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. (ESV)

The reason that we can’t conjure it up is because true peace isn’t something that we can fabricate for ourselves. It comes from Jesus.

So when you’re in desperate need of peace, stop banging your head up against a brick wall. Go to Jesus, cast your cares on Him and ask Him for His peace.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
