The Power of Humility

Proverbs 29:23 Your pride can bring you down. Humility will bring you honour.

Pride and humility, are complete opposites. And in a world where everybody’s trying to put their best foot forward, humility can be difficult to find.

We all know people who, to put it bluntly, are full of themselves. They throw their weight around and walk over the top of people, as though they’re more important than everybody else. They imagine that everyone looks up to them. “Wow, isn’t he great? Isn’t she fantastic?”

That’s what pride does. It deludes the mind and destroys relationships. Come on, how do you react to someone who’s proud and arrogant? Are they the ones you respect and look up to? I don’t think so. They’re the ones, honestly, that we try to avoid.

In a strange sort of a twist, the people we respect are the ones who put themselves last; the ones who consider themselves to be the least. The people we really respect, are the ones who walk into the room and instead of saying, “Here I am,” they look around and they say, “Ah, there you are.” They’re the ones, in our heart of hearts, who we want to be around, who we listen to and who we want to honour – the humble ones.

Proverbs 29:23 Your pride can bring you down. Humility will bring you honour.

What an irony! The one who wants to be first, we actually put last. The one who puts themselves last, we actually put first. Who’d have thought?

So, do you mind if I ask you today, when you walk into a room, are you the “Here I am!” kind of person, or do you look out first for others? “Ah, there you are!” Because …

Your pride will bring you down. But humility will bring you honour.
