There’s Wisdom … and Then, There’s Wisdom

1 Corinthians 3:18-20 Don’t fool yourselves. Whoever thinks they are wise in this world should become a fool. That’s the only way they can be wise. I say this because the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He catches those who think they are wise in their own clever traps.” The Scriptures also say, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise. He knows that their thoughts are worth nothing.”

Have you ever looked at something that someone’s done and thought to yourself, “How could they be that stupid?” Well, are they really that stupid … or is there something else going on?

I’m guessing you’re no stranger to the leaning tower of Pisa. During the first phase of its construction which began in 1173, the tower started sinking because of the unstable soil under its foundations. So they stopped construction at three floors for nearly a century. When they started again in 1272, the new floors were deliberately designed to have one side taller than the other to compensate for the lean.

But the tower continued to sink and tilt until 2008 when stabilisation efforts were finally completed – 835 years after the first sod was turned. Are people really that stupid? Or could it be that we humans become so invested in the things we’ve built on unstable foundations, that we end up completely abandoning good sense?

There’s a world of difference between worldly wisdom and godly wisdom. And when you’re locked into worldly wisdom, God’s wisdom seems crazy. When you’re building on a leaning tower, the idea of knocking it down and starting again seems ludicrous … when actually, the truly crazy option is taking almost a thousand years to build a leaning tower.

When it comes to God’s wisdom … perhaps think again.

That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
