Wanderer, Come Home

Luke 15:17-20 The son realised that he had been very foolish. He thought, ‘All my father’s hired workers have plenty of food. But here I am, almost dead because I have nothing to eat. I will leave and go to my father. I will say to him: Father, I have sinned against God and have done wrong to you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But let me be like one of your hired workers.’ So he left and went to his father.

It’s not at all that uncommon to find yourself feeling somewhat untethered from life. Your day-to-day reality marches on but it’s a tad surreal, almost as though you’re there but not really there.

Have you ever wandered off on your own merry way and woken up one day wondering how you got there; how you’d ever get back?

Jesus told a story about a young man who demanded his inheritance from his father and then headed out and blew the lot – the story of the prodigal son. One day, though …

I’m sure he rehearsed that speech a dozen times. But if you know the rest of the story, Dad was waiting for him and came running out to greet him, hugging him before the son could even start his speech. Then, of all things, Dad threw him a party.

There’s a message there for those who’re feeling a bit untethered, for those who’ve wandered away from God who might be wondering how to approach Dad if they turned back to Him.

The message is this: stop rehearsing your speech. Just come home.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
