When Good Men Do Nothing

Proverbs 31:8,9 Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Help people who are in trouble. Stand up for what you know is right and judge all people fairly. Protect the rights of the poor and those who need help.

The more comfortable our lives become – and that after all is what economic progress is all about – the easier it is, to ignore the plight of those countless millions “out there” who are suffering. Sad, but true.

With all the evil in the world today – terrorism, brutality, persecution, socio–economic exploitation, child labour, forced prostitution – all seemingly out of control, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that “little old me” can’t make one iota of difference.

If that’s a conclusion you’ve come to, then you’d be completely and absolutely wrong!! Way back in the 1700’s there was an Irish statesman by the name of Edmund Bourke who said this:

That the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.

When we see evil being perpetrated in our little patch on this earth, we can do something. We can stand up, speak out, act against the evil … even though it may cost us our reputations, even our lives.

Proverbs 31:8,9 Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Help people who are in trouble. Stand up for what you know is right and judge all people fairly. Protect the rights of the poor and those who need help.

Down through the centuries, it’s been Christians who have agitated to end slavery, who have brought education and healthcare to the poor. And it’s for this reason that Christians still today speak out against things like abortion, worker exploitation, unjust regimes.

Look, you and I may not be able to change the world, but we can speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves. We can help those in trouble. We can stand up for what’s right. We can protect the rights of the poor. We can help those in need. You can. I can.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
