Working for Peace

James 3:18 People who work for peace in a peaceful way get the blessings that come from right living.

Yesterday we chatted about the uncommon wisdom that we need in order to navigate conflict in a godly way. The wisdom of God that’s available to you and me. The problem is though that all too often, we don’t make peace a priority.

I have never met anyone who doesn’t want peace in their lives. Perhaps there are some out there, but most of us yearn for peace.

And yet, the world in which we live is anything but peaceful. Whether it’s the social, political, religious, racial or ideological divisions tearing our society apart, or the personal conflicts in our own families, neighbourhoods or workplaces … this peace that we all crave, seems like a mirage in the desert.

I wonder, in the various conflicts that you have going on in your world (and we all have some) what do you believe God is calling you to do? Or perhaps, you haven’t as yet heard Him call you to do anything. Well, here it is:

James 3:18 People who work for peace in a peaceful way get the blessings that come from right living.

The original Greek manuscript talks about people who “make peace”, but I like this translation, because peace is something that you have to work at. It doesn’t just happen. Things don’t just fall into place. We need to approach conflict situations, you and I, with God’s wisdom but also with that attitude that I have to work at this.

In fact, if you call yourself a child of God, then pretty close to the top of your job description, lies your role as a peacemaker on His behalf. So thinking about the various conflicts that you’re involved in at the moment, what can you do to work for peace. Because as you sow peace, so shall you reap the blessings that come from it. That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
