A Dog Called Charlie

Colossians 3:12 God has chosen you and made you his holy people. He loves you. So your new life should be like this: Show mercy to others. Be kind, humble, gentle, and patient.

I was staying overnight with a friend recently. It was a cold night, so I was really quite pleased to get inside that front door. And almost immediately, I was greeted by Charlie, the shortest, scruffiest looking excuse for a dog I’ve ever seen. His wiry black coat had greyed with the years, and he had a bit of a hobble – arthritis no doubt.

Now, I have to tell you, I am not a dog person, but Charlie came and sat next to me with this gentle, kind demeanour and within just half an hour, honestly, I fell in love with him.

It seems to me there are quite a few “Charlies” in this world; people who, on the outside, don’t seem to have much to offer. But actually, they have the power to light up your day.

Maybe you’re a bit of a “Charlie”; one of those kind, gentle souls who other people seem to pass over, because to them, on the surface, you don’t appear to have all that much to offer. Hmm?

God has chosen you and made you his holy people. He loves you. So your new life should be like this: Show mercy to others. Be kind, humble, gentle, and patient. (Colossians 3:12)

Those people – those “Charlies” – are so precious. Certainly to God and certainly to the rest of us, if only we’d bother to get to know them.

Can I encourage you today, just to be who God made you to be. Because He needs you to be a “Charlie” on a cold night, to someone like me, who’s not really a dog person.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
