Against Overwhelming Odds
1 Samuel 17:47 All the people gathered here will know that the LORD doesn’t need swords or spears to save people. The battle belongs to the LORD, and he will help us defeat all of you.
Every now and then we find ourselves confronted by overwhelming odds. A marriage that’s falling apart. A health prognosis that rocks you to the core. A cash crunch. A mortgage foreclosure. A wayward child. The death of a loved one. What do you do in those times? How do you respond? How do you get through to the other side without completely falling apart?
These are important questions because those times come to us all. I’ve been through mine, you’ve been through yours, and there’s every likelihood that there are more to come.
Most of us know the story of David and Goliath. Israel’s army was pinned down by the Philistines, facing certain defeat. To make matters worse, those Philistines had a giant of a man, Goliath, who seemed capable of slaying pretty much anyone.
Along comes a young, naive, inexperienced David – well before he became king – prepared to take Goliath on. Really? Are you crazy? But this is what David said to the giant as he faced off with him:
1 Samuel 17:47 All the people gathered here will know that the LORD doesn’t need swords or spears to save people. The battle belongs to the LORD, and he will help us defeat all of you.
Doubtless you know how it ends. With a single stone in his slingshot, David goes on to slay Goliath.
Giants will come your way. The odds will seem impossible. But instead of looking at God through your circumstances, you can choose to look at your circumstances through God. Trust Him. Be confident in Him.
Because … the battle belongs to the Lord.
That’s His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
