Because You Believed

Ephesians 2:8,9 I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God. You are not saved by the things you have done, so there is nothing to boast about.

When it comes to spending eternity with God, the grace and mercy of God are not enough! What Berni, have you gone completely mad? Of course, they are! Well, no, they’re not. There’s one more thing in the equation.

Think about it. The fact that I loved Jacqui, who is now my wife, enough to propose to her wasn’t enough for us to become husband and wife. The other part of that great love-transaction was that she had to say yes. That marriage covenant of ours is in place today because we both said yes and indeed, we both keep on saying yes to one another every day.

And as much as the grace and mercy of God are completely on offer to each one of us, to each man, woman and child on this planet, the offer on its own isn’t enough. Many are still headed to a Christless eternity.

Ephesians 2:8,9 I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God. You are not saved by the things you have done, so there is nothing to boast about.

Why have we been saved by grace? Because we believed. No, we didn’t save ourselves any more than my wife proposed to herself. But when we respond to the offer of God’s grace and mercy in Christ through faith, then we are saved.

He’s done all the heavy lifting here. He’s done it all through the death and resurrection of Jesus. But we still have to say “yes”. We still have to come to Him in faith, and believe with all that we are, trust our very life into Jesus’s scarred hands in order to be saved by grace through all that He has done for us.

Have you said yes? Have you believed?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
