Brand Jesus

Romans 5:7,8 Very few people will die to save the life of someone else, even if it is for a good person. Someone might be willing to die for an especially good person. But Christ died for us while we were still sinners, and by this God showed how much he loves us.

In today’s lucrative marketplace, branding is everything. If you can establish a cool brand out there, even if your product is a bit so-so, you’re likely to make it big. But the coolness of a brand is a fickle thing.

I asked a teenager the other day, “What’s cool?”

“Cool” is a concept that’s very important amongst young folk. “Cool” influences a lot of decisions, to the point where car manufacturers are targeting children in their ads because the kids know what’s cool, and the car manufacturers know that they’ll influence their parents’ purchasing decision, even one as big as a new car … true story.

So what’s number one at being cool these days? Is it the latest smartphone (Apple or Android), or designer brand, or trend, or celebrity look?

And what about Brand Jesus? Here’s the crazy thing. Whilst Brand church is seriously uncool in the marketplace, Brand Jesus on the other hand is very cool. This Jesus who railed against hypocrisy, who helped the poor, who said stuff that made sense, who did things that demonstrated a gritty authenticity – that’s cool!

But there’s one more thing. Above everything else, Brand Jesus is cool because He is God, speaking with us in a love language that we can understand.

Romans 5:7,8 Very few people will die to save the life of someone else, even if it is for a good person. Someone might be willing to die for an especially good person. But Christ died for us while we were still sinners, and by this God showed how much he loves us.

Jesus is God saying, “I love you,” with His very life. We all want to be loved that way. We all need to be loved that way.

Jesus didn’t just say love. He did love, with His very life. Cool.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
