Cancel Culture

Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (ESV)

The very best sort of humour, in my book, is the sort that both makes you laugh and think; the sort that’s funny, but at the same time cuts so close to the bone that it rocks you to the core.

I came across that very sort of humour in a meme recently on social media. It was a drawing of Jesus preaching to a crowd with this Scripture verse on it:

Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (ESV)

And one guy in the crowd says to the next guy: For the Son of God, He’s not very tolerant, is He?!

Tolerance of all things, all perspectives, all lifestyles, every immorality, every perversion, every arrogance, every … well, tolerance, is the catchcry of this age. And cancel culture is absolutely brutal in its singular mission to expunge any whiff of intolerance, even when that intolerance is laser-focussed on evil itself.

Well, it doesn’t get much more intolerant than this: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. That kingdom of which Jesus is speaking is the sovereign reign of God over this earth; the very same One who, according to Jesus, will judge the living and the dead, who’ll send those who don’t believe in His Son into a Christless eternity called hell.

So, what do you do with that? Well, either you water Jesus down … yeah, He was a good guy with some wise principles to live by, or you cancel Him completely which many have done. Or you take to heart His call and His warning:

Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
