Choking on Onion

John 5:24 I assure you, anyone who hears what I say and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life. They will not be judged guilty. They have already left death and have entered into life.

Heaven and hell – oh, really Berni … are you on about that again? They don’t seem all that relevant to us on a day to day basis. But one day … one day, they’re the only thing that will matter – for all eternity.

A few years ago now, I had one of the worst experiences of my life. It was a Saturday like any other. I was cooking lunch on the BBQ in the backyard, the onions were almost done so I thought I’d just try a bit. Well, somehow, it went down the wrong way and I couldn’t breathe. This wasn’t just some coughing fit. I stopped breathing and went blue in the face.

I raced inside to my wife and literally grabbed her head, put her mouth to mine and she gave me mouth to mouth. I can honestly say, if she hadn’t been there that day, I wouldn’t be here today.

The body is such an amazingly complex, powerful and resilient thing. And yet, one small piece of onion almost finished me off.

We live life as though we’ll always be here. We won’t. And it could happen just as quickly and unexpectedly as that.

Are you ready? Are you ready to go? Because one day, you will. And when you do, where will you be headed? Jesus put it quite succinctly, like this:

John 5:24 I assure you, anyone who hears what I say and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life. They will not be judged guilty. They have already left death and have entered into life.

If you’ve heard and believed, you have the gift of eternal life. But if you haven’t, then you will be judged guilty. You will spend eternity in that place we call hell, separated from God forever.

That’s not me saying it. It’s Jesus.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
