Confident Grace

Hebrews 4:14-16 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (ESV)

Well, a blessed and a merry Christmas to you on this Christmas day, that one day in the year when we stop to remember the entry of God’s grace into this world through that Child in the manger.

But for many, it’s been a tough year. In fact, you can feel so pummelled by life, so bruised, that it’s difficult even to lift your eyes and thank God for sending Jesus to this earth for you.

On top of that, we can all look back on our mistakes and failures this past year, as that deep sense of unworthiness grips our hearts. That makes it difficult to celebrate to the coming of your Saviour, doesn’t it?

If perhaps some of that rings true for you, I have some sensational news for you. Here it is – talking about this very Jesus who came to earth for you:

Hebrews 4:14-16 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (ESV)

Because Jesus has walked our road, because of His humanity, His suffering … He totally gets it. And for that reason, here, now, today, you and I can confidently come before His throne of grace to receive His mercy, to discover afresh and anew His grace in our hour of need.

That’s Christmas. That’s Jesus.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
