Devilish Pride

Luke 4:5-7 Then the devil took Jesus and in a moment of time showed him all the kingdoms of the world. The devil said to him, “I will make you king over all these places. You will have power over them, and you will get all the glory. It has all been given to me. I can give it to anyone I want. I will give it all to you, if you will only worship me.”

Have you ever had the devil dangle a temptation under your nose that sparked your imagination as to how successful you could become; how impressed others would be? You’re not alone!

Opportunities abound in this life – even when you compare yourself to others, and in your own estimation you come up short again and again; even when life’s not turning out to be what you’d hoped for; even when you’ve failed and you’re in the process of picking up the pieces.

Opportunities still come knocking at your door. And in fact, when we’re down in the dumps, as we all are from time to time, those opportunities are so alluring. That’s why so many people get suckered in by these get-rich-quick scams. The sparkle of success is so great right there amidst your suffering that the thought of taking a crazy risk doesn’t seem all that bad.

He’d been in the wilderness for forty days. He hadn’t eaten anything. He was weak. He was vulnerable.

You will have power over them, and you will get all the glory. It has all been given to me. I can give it to anyone I want. I will give it all to you, if you will only worship me.”

As author and speaker Joshua Botello puts it, if the devil can’t push you down, he’ll try to puff you up. Don’t be tempted. Stay humble.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
