Dinner with Jesus

Matthew 9:10,11 Jesus ate dinner at Matthew’s house. Many tax collectors and others with bad reputations came and ate with him and his followers. The Pharisees saw that Jesus was eating with these people. They asked his followers, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and other sinners?”

The idea that I wasn’t good enough for God is what kept me from turning my life over to Him for close on twenty years. Twenty years! Of course, I could never be good enough for God. But the one thing I hadn’t counted on was Jesus.

I guess if Jesus came to visit my town, I’d love to have Him over to dinner. It’s always nice to have the boss over for dinner. You think about your town, where you live… all the people that work for Jesus – the bishops or ministers or elders or evangelists or whatever – they’re surely the ones who’ve earned a meal with the Boss.

So He catches the bus in from the airport and He doesn’t even stop at any of the churches or homes of any of these good and godly ministers. Nope. Instead, He goes straight to a hotel. You know … that really seedy bar in town – the place where there’s always trouble, people getting drunk and the odd stabbing or shooting, not to mention the prostitution – the sort of place you wouldn’t be seen dead in. Got the picture?

Now you might think … Berni, you’re making all this up. Not at all. Because that’s exactly where Jesus ended up time and time again, and didn’t the religious leaders of His day get their noses out of joint?

Now that’s a very good question. Why?

Maybe Jesus didn’t come just for the spiritual elite. Maybe He’s far more interested in the bog-ordinary folk, the sinners, like you and me. Jesus.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
