Do You Have Your Presents Ready to Go?

James 1:17 Everything good comes from God. Every perfect gift is from him. These good gifts come down from the Father who made all the lights in the sky. But God never changes like the shadows from those lights. He is always the same.

When you think about it, the tradition of putting presents under the Christmas tree is rather an odd way to celebrate the birth of Jesus into this world. Truly odd.

We’ve all done it, haven’t we? Raced around in the days leading up to Christmas, buying this and that for those whom we love. And there’s always that one, difficult-to-buy-for person in our lives – usually a man. Women are so much easier to buy for, don’t you think?

And yet rarely do we stop to ask … why? Why do we celebrate Christmas through the buying of presents – often spending money we don’t have on things that the people we’re buying for, don’t need.

The reason is that we’re celebrating the greatest gift ever given to humanity. Jesus, the Son of God, given for us, that we might live.

James 1:17 Everything good comes from God. Every perfect gift is from him. These good gifts come down from the Father who made all the lights in the sky. But God never changes like the shadows from those lights. He is always the same.

Now that’s not a verse that we traditionally associate with Christmas, but the bit that really gets me there, is the fact that God never changes. He’s always the same. He gave the whole of creation to us, for us to have dominion over it. You don’t have to look very far to see how badly we, the human race, have botched it up.

We turned our backs on this generous God, so then He sent His Son, Jesus to save us. The greatest gift ever given to humanity. The greatest gift ever given to you and me.

Something to remember as we’re unwrapping the presents under the tree. Jesus. Just perfect.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
