Don’t Just Sit There

John 15:5 I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you stay joined to me, and I to you, you will produce plenty of fruit. But separated from me you won’t be able to do anything.

Have you ever dreamed of doing something really good, something profound, something that would make this world a better place? We all have, right? But there seem to be so many obstacles in front of you that conspire to stop that dream from becoming a reality.

Do you know what I think the greatest obstacle of all is? Our day-to-day humdrum – just the reality of getting through life, making ends meet, getting to the end of the week exhausted and trying to grab a bit of rest over the weekend.

When you’re living your life like that, you can dream all you like, but deep down in your heart you end up in the place where you believe that, clearly, the time’s not right. I just have to wait for God to do something.

And yet Jesus has an entirely different perspective:

John 15:5 I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you stay joined to me, and I to you, you will produce plenty of fruit. But separated from me you won’t be able to do anything.

William Booth was a Methodist preacher who, surrounded by unspeakable poverty, had a dream to help the poor and marginalised. So in 1865 he founded the Salvation Army – a movement that’s had an enormous impact since in the lives of millions .

It seems that he too believed that this “fruit” was a natural consequence of his relationship with Jesus. He once wrote, “I’m not waiting for a move of God. I am a move of God.”

Fact: if you stay joined to Jesus, you’ll produce plenty of fruit.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
