Drop in a Bucket

Mark 4:37-39 A very bad wind came up on the lake. The waves were coming over the sides and into the boat, and it was almost full of water. Jesus was inside the boat, sleeping with his head on a pillow. The followers went and woke him. They said, “Teacher, don’t you care about us? We are going to drown!” Jesus stood up and gave a command to the wind and the water. He said, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind stopped, and the sea became calm.

Whether we like it or not, no matter how strong we think we are, how much we think we have our act together, at some point life will overwhelm us. It just seems to happen that way. The question is, then what?

We’ve all heard stories of people going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. They’re just stories until you see it for yourself. I was there recently and the power of 76,000 gallons or 345,000 litres of water per second going over the edge is just unbelievable.

So standing there watching this awesome spectacle, in my mind I put myself in that barrel. It was just the most frightening thing and sometimes life feels like that. It’s as though you’re being swept along in this angry water heading for the falls and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. As I was standing there at the top of Niagara Falls getting wet from the spray, this story came to mind:

Mark 4:37-39 A very bad wind came up on the lake. The waves were coming over the sides and into the boat, and it was almost full of water. Jesus was inside the boat, sleeping with his head on a pillow. The followers went and woke him. They said, “Teacher, don’t you care about us? We are going to drown!” Jesus stood up and gave a command to the wind and the water. He said, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind stopped, and the sea became calm.

In that moment I remembered that, with all its power and ferocity, Niagara Falls was but a drop in the ocean compared to the power of my God who created the universe.

So, as you perhaps one day find yourself heading for those falls in a barrel, remember – at His command … the wind stops, and the sea becomes calm.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
