Family Matters

Joshua 24:15 But maybe you don’t want to serve the LORD. You must choose for yourselves today. Today you must decide who you will serve. Will you serve the gods that your ancestors worshiped when they lived on the other side of the Euphrates River? Or will you serve the gods of the Amorites who lived in this land? You must choose for yourselves. But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.

Each one of us, individually, at some point has to choose – either to believe in Jesus and serve Him as Lord, or to reject Him and go our own way. There’s no middle ground.

It’s a choice that I hope you’ve made in His favour, as have I. And it’s a choice that we need to make continually, day by day, thought by thought, action by action … for the rest of our days on this earth.

But the tendency for many is to think too much as individuals, and not enough as families. Granted, some cultures are indeed family oriented. Yet as western-style affluence wraps its tentacles even around those cultures – the collective family way of living is breaking down.

That’s why this Scripture is so timely, no matter where you happen to live; what culture you happen to come from:

Joshua 24:15 But maybe you don’t want to serve the LORD. You must choose for yourselves today. Today you must decide who you will serve. Will you serve the gods that your ancestors worshiped when they lived on the other side of the Euphrates River? Or will you serve the gods of the Amorites who lived in this land? You must choose for yourselves. But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.

It turns out that the decision to love God, to believe in Jesus, to live our lives for Him, is as much about our respective families as it is about us as individuals.

Your family matters to God – hugely so. So, as for you and your family, whom will you serve?

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
