Filled with the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 5:18-20 Don’t be drunk with wine, which will ruin your life, but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There are lots of people who believe with all their hearts in Jesus, and yet, who at the very same time, feel uncomfortable with all this “Holy Spirit” business. I wonder, why is that?

Baptised in the Holy Spirit. Filled with the Spirit. Man, that’s going to get a few people nervous, right? Except that it’s all right there in the Bible. In fact,

And indeed, the tense of the Greek verb there “to be filled” literally means for us to go on continually being filled with the Holy Spirit. That’s a command. So, are you ready?

Father God, not everything we read in your Word immediately makes sense to us – especially something like this. And Lord, we’ve seen some of the excesses and stupidities committed in your name. But none of that matters because your Word promises that the Holy Spirit will come upon us in power; the power to be holy, the power to do your will. Lord, we long for that power. And however you want to do that in our lives, however you want to pour your Spirit out on us, please do that, whatever it may cost us. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen.

What the Bible says about the work of the Holy Spirit doesn’t always fit that well with our modern, comfortable mindsets. I get that. But here’s the command again in case you missed it: go on being filled with the Spirit.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
