God’s Guarantee
Ephesians 1:13-14 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Most products these days come with some sort of guarantee … and yet some guarantees, let’s be honest, aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.
Back in 1967 though, the World Health Organisation launched an intensive global campaign to eradicate smallpox. They guaranteed that through mass vaccinations and surveillance, they’d eliminate the disease. That was a big call. And yet, by 1980 they’d done just that – eradicated smallpox. That’s amazing! Could anything ever beat that?
Well there is one thing, something much greater even than the global eradication of a deadly disease. It’s God’s guarantee to you of all that He has ready and waiting for you … for all eternity. Here it is:
Ephesians 1:13-14 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. (ESV)
Some people hear that message – the Good News that Jesus died to pay for their sin, that He rose again to give them a new, eternal life – they believe … but then life gets in the way. Their faith, such as it was, starts to feel wobbly. They begin to wonder, “Was it all real? Is God still there? Do I still have that eternal life?” Listen again:
When you heard the truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is God’s guarantee of your inheritance.
As 20th Century Welsh theologian Martyn Lloyd-Jones put it, “Thank God that my salvation doesn’t depend upon my frail hold on Him, but on His mighty grasp upon me.”
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
