Hanging Around
Proverbs 13:20 Be friends with those who are wise, and you will become wise. Choose fools to be your friends, and you will have trouble.
I wonder … how do you choose your friends? Most of us befriend people without even thinking. There’s no interview or selection process. We don’t ask them to apply and then vet their qualifications and experience. We just kind of become friends with people we like. But that, as it turns out, can be a dangerous thing to do.
People. Friends. Family. We all know that the depth and the quality and the richness of those relationships have a huge impact on our lives.
But where there’s an upside, there’s also a downside. You know the people who are always complaining or gossiping? The ones with an attitude or an outlook or a perspective that’s somehow poisoned?
If we hang around them long enough, if we let them feed us that negative stuff that spews forth from their lives, my hunch is that we’ll end up catching what they’ve got. It turns out that the people we hang around have a huge influence on our lives, whether we like it or not.
Proverbs 13:20 Be friends with those who are wise, and you will become wise. Choose fools to be your friends, and you will have trouble.
There is a clear choice between befriending people who are wise and those who are fools.
You know that old adage “you are what you eat” … hang around wise people, let them become the influencers in your life, and as surely as God made little green apples you too will grow through their wisdom.
On the other hand … if you choose fools to be your closest confidantes, then their foolishness will end up poisoning your system and your life as well.
We don’t live in a perfect world, so we can’t completely avoid the fools. The question is, will you allow them to become your friends? Will you allow them to influence you?
Or will you seek out friends and mentors who are full of godly wisdom?
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
